I sat down the other night to watch September Issue. In case you are unaware of this film, it is a documentary about the coveted September issue of Vogue magazine. They deem this issue the "fashion bible" and it's the start of the fall fashion scene. If you know me, you know that I am a purse fanatic. It all started with Louis Vuitton, then Coach, throw some Dolce & Gabbana in the mix, and now Gucci. I was a Label whore. I can't wear the clothes, so the purses were the only thing that I could own that would show I liked labels....until this film. The film did nothing wrong, I didn't learn anything extraordinary that I didn't know before. What did happen, however, is all of a sudden my mind opened up and realized that fashion=a bunch of people sitting around a table dictating an agenda. Editors, designers, Corporate goons alike...they all decide what the "it" things will be, and somehow we all blindly take it and go, yes that IS amazing, I love that, I must own it. Now, after this "epiphany" I don't even want to be apart of it. I want to buy things because I like them not because 5 months ago a group of people decided so.
Is this what we call growing up...and thinking for yourself? damn.
